Description
The Illustrated ‘Farewell’ completes Tharp’s earlier work As Time Goes By (1973) by incorporating the first two movements of Haydn’s 45th Symphony.
As Time Goes By, originally premiered by The Joffrey Ballet in 1973, was set to the symphony’s third and fourth movements. The piece began with an aggressive, percussive 45-second performance in silence by a single female dancer, and it ended with a contrasting long fluid adagio danced by a single male with the symphony’s conclusion. Intertwining these solos, the full ensemble appeared in shifting groupings and configurations.
In The Illustrated ‘Farewell,’ the addition of the symphony’s opening movements introduces an extended pas de deux whose movement and relationship juxtapose the original soloist pairing.
This work was made possible by generous philanthropic support from Jay Franke and Davis Herro and additional support by The Ballet Association.
