Description

Slacktide is set to a new arrangement of Philip Glass’s “Águas da Amazônia” created and performed by Third Coast Percussion.

Slacktide begins with the final hand gesture from In the Upper Room (1986), which was also set to Glass. “I take that last move and make it go incredibly slow into the future,” Tharp said. “Into another place, and that other place is a transformation.” Similarly, the choreography of the central figure, performed by Marzia Memoli, has been stitched together and reimagined from Tharp’s archive of video improvisation sessions. The result is meditative yet with an undercurrent of “loose, limb flinging, heavily torqued wildness.”

From the original program: “SLACKTIDE was commissioned by New York City Center (New York); the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts (Washington, DC); and the University of California, Arts & Lectures (Santa Barbara). This arrangement by Third Coast Percussion of Águas da Amazônia by Philip Glass was commissioned with support from Modlin Center for the Arts, University of Richmond; the Zell Family Foundation; the Maxine and Stuart Frankel Foundation; the Julian Family Foundation; and Steph and Daniel Heffner.
